Thank you so kindly for stopping by. I did check to see if I had past views of this beauty ...but no luck ...so I am guessing I didn't share them at that past moment?? Thinky face??! It was fun to see what views I took verses what the hubby did. Several photos he is in mine and I am in his. LOL!! I truly appreciate that the locals keep this area beautiful. This mill is treasured for sure ...most respect for that, I wish so many other mills were respected as this one. Have a blessed day. Take Care. Beth ( ;

  100th anniversary 1920 - 2020 "Brightwell's Mill" , Madison Heights, Virginia "created in the early 1800s and was constructed a second time following a  destructive flood in August 1942." I think we have visited this mill maybe 2 or 3 times ... now it has never been open ...but on the website it says it has "events", maybe when you visit be sure to check it out when it is available for a tour or Christmas / Thanksgiving time? That would be away awesome to see it during the seasonal time. This trip happened Sept 2024 ... end of the month ...we took a bike ride through Madison Heights and ate our Little Caesars pizza at this mill before going home. Hope you enjoy this day with me ...I hope 2025 will be awesome for us all ... What are you plans? Galt's Mill Complex, Madison Heights, VA. check out the info you can find on Wikipedia ...shocked to see this beauty up and close and personal ... we saw it surrounded by trees and brush. Sad to see it neede...

Cook's Mill

Image
  Cook's Mill, also known as The Old Mill and Greenville Roller Mill, Greenville, West Virginia "1797, Valentine Cook which includes a "gristmill" and we know that he had carved out a 650 acre tract here by the time of a 1774 survey. We can surmise that the mill was built soon after because much of the tillable farmland along Indian Creek had already been claimed and was presumably being cleared and farmed to some degree. So, there would have been a real need to grind corn and wheat in an area so remote from other facilities. The mill would have been small and powered by a waterwheel connected to at least one "run of millstones" by wooden shafts and gears. but a mill on the frontier would have been more basic. Valentine Cook also had a gunpowder mill by 1797. using saltpeter from local caves, but whether this was on this site is unknown.  A second mill must have been built in 1858, to judge by a contract signed late in 1857, by Jacob A. Cook, Riley B. Cook ...

Apparently the whole east coast was dealing with a real heat wave, BIG OOPIES, on that, normally we go north and can hide out in the shade and love the weather they have during that season of the year. Didn't work this time, oh well, maybe next year.
